For five years, Active Through Football has been changing the game, and changing lives.
Backed by Sport England, funded by The National Lottery and delivered by the Football Foundation, the pioneering programme has used the power of football and physical activity to help people overcome barriers to being active.
From informal football sessions to gentle exercise and walking groups, Active Through Football has reached people who face some of the biggest barriers to participation.
Recognising that people’s lives are shaped by many factors like race, income, disability, and gender, project teams work collaboratively with local people to develop community-led initiatives that they can call their own.
In fact, many of those involved were previously among the least active in their communities. Through a welcoming and inclusive approach, thousands of people have been supported to take their first steps towards a more active lifestyle.
"Five years on, Active Through Football continues to demonstrate what is possible when communities are given the power to lead change.
Robert Sullivan, CEO, Football Foundation
Robert Sullivan, CEO of Football Foundation, praised the program for its lasting impact: "Five years on, Active Through Football continues to demonstrate what is possible when communities are given the power to lead change. The Football Foundation continues to work closely with our funding partners, the Premier League, The FA, Government and Sport England, to ensure everyone has access to great places and opportunities to play. Thanks to National Lottery investment through Active Through Football, programmes like this are helping to break down barriers, strengthen communities and create life-changing experiences for people across the country that make positive changes that last long after the final whistle".
