Disability Football and 3G Football Turf Pitches

We’re committed to improving football for disabled people. Our aim is to create and sustain a culture across the game, where disabled people have access to all opportunities and feel they truly belong on and off the pitch. You and your facility have an important role in helping us make that happen.

Common questions about disability football and 3G pitches

Guidance

What is appropriate footwear on a 3G pitch?

Players should adhere to the guidance provided by the manufacturer. This means that boots with a short plastic or rubber stud are encouraged. The use of flat sole shoes is not recommended as this will compact the infill and cause early deterioration of the surface. However, this should never exclude users that are unable to wear studded boots, including disabled footballers. For example, this could be the case for some players with cerebral palsy who need to wear leg splints which makes the use of standard football boots impractical.

Can Frame Football take place on a 3G pitch?

Yes. Frame Football is an adapted format of football designed for players who use a frame or walker. Frame footballers can also play in pan-disability football. Whilst this might create some extra stress on the fibres of the pitch some additional maintenance should minimise any impact.

Can amputee football take place on a 3G pitch?

Yes. Amputee football is an adapted format of football designed for players with an amputation or a congenital limb difference. In amputee football, outfield players use crutches to move around the pitch. Amputee footballers can also play pan-disability football on their crutches. Whilst this might create some extra stress on the fibres of the pitch some additional maintenance should minimise any impact.

Can I use a wheelchair on a 3G pitch?

The short answer is yes; however, this really is only likely to apply when the person using the wheelchair is a coach and needs access to the sideline or the dug-out. 3G FTPs are not designed for wheelchair sport. For example, powerchair football, which is a dynamic and fast paced version of football adapted for electric wheelchair (powerchair) users, is typically played on a 30m x 18m basketball court.

What additional maintenance do I need to do to look after my 3G pitch?

Extra targeted brushing to bring back the pile of the surface back to its upright position would be recommended. If you’re usure how best to maintain your pitch to the highest standard, always seek guidance from the manufacturer.
