The Football Foundation is the Premier League, The FA and Government’s charity dedicated to improving grassroots facilities, transforming lives and strengthening communities. We are celebrating our 20th anniversary this year. Since we started in 2000, we’ve supported more than more than £1.6 billion worth of projects that are improving the experience of playing football at grassroots facilities across England.

Upshot is an online system which helps funders and deliverers of sport & non-sport organisations set objectives, collect and manage their data, monitor progress and evidence their achievements. Upshot allows organisations to evidence their impact in one place, in real time, and on any device. Upshot has been so well received that it is now being used by over 850 different organisations, including sports governing bodies, universities, wildlife trusts, housing associations, local authorities and international NGOs.

The role

We are looking for a creative, enthusiastic intern to experience one of the most rewarding year-in-industry placements out there. Our Marketing & Communications Intern will help communicate the role and activities of the Football Foundation with a focus on Upshot. You will produce articles for the Upshot website, create marketing collateral, film & edit client testimonial videos and much more. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Produce news stories and features for Foundation and Upshot websites and publications.
  • Film, edit and target video content to a high standard, consulting with colleagues as necessary.
  • Deliver Upshot’s social media strategy across its channels, ensuring content is engaging and professional.
  • Help analyse Upshot traditional and social media reach and impact using analytics and other feedback mechanisms from clients and users, both internal and external.
  • Management and maintenance of Upshot’s social media and analytics channels such as Google Ads and LinkedinAdwords through effective usage of GoogleAnalytics and LinkedinAnalytics
  • Assist with internal comms, especially with the production of the monthly staff update report.
  • Identify and write up case studies for both the Football Foundation and Upshot.
  • Assist the Football Foundation Communications and Upshot team in the delivery of events.
  • Assist with the preparation and delivery of strategic, top-level PR initiatives, as required.
  • Work with the Communications and Upshot team to identify and develop opportunities to enhance the Foundation and Upshot’s brand, in the UK and internationally.
  • Help produce the organisations’ product update emails to clients and monthly newsletter.
  • Work with Communications team to develop contacts with journalists at both regional and national levels, with the aim of securing local and national coverage of all aspects of the organisation’s work.
  • Website content management (CMS)


Other activity:

•    To undertake duties as can be reasonably expected to ensure the smooth running and efficiency of the department.

•    To carry out duties and responsibilities of the post at all times in compliance with Foundation policies – especially Equal Opportunities and Health & Safety.

•    Occasional travel within the UK may also be required

What are we looking for?

Successful candidates will ideally have some experience in marketing and communications and have experience in using social media as a marketing tool. 

Any previous experience of working with content creation for website and social channels is desirable. They will most likely be a current student in a relevant degree subject, such as marketing, public relations or sports management.

The post holder will have to work to tight deadlines and be a proactive self-starter. They will need to combine a creative mind with strong organisational skills and a strong work ethic. Candidates must be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills, both oral and written, as well as the ability to work as part of a team.
