Mayor of London: Facilities Fund

The London Nautical School received a £36,000 grant from the Mayor of London’s fund which will go towards the commissioning of six new boats.

The boats that are being built are two 25 foot long gigs and 4 RS Feva racing dinghies. The gigs are very traditional looking boats with masts that can be quickly lowered to go under London’s bridges and also allow. The RS Feva boats which are racing boats adopted by the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) are to be kept and moored at several spots along the River Thames

The London Nautical School was founded in 1915, as a consequence of the official report into the loss of the “Titanic”. In 1990, it became one of the country’s first 11-18 comprehensive secondary schools for boys to be awarded grant maintained status. Among the schools alumni is the First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope

The school is unique in the sense that every child in year seven to year nine takes part in practical water sports. In addition, they have a strong track record of making their facilities and equipment available to external groups meaning that over 500 young people get afloat every year through the School.
