President of the Football Foundation, Rt Hon Lord Pendry and Representatives of Stalybridge Celtic Juniors FC: Garry Pearce (Chairman), Carl Whitehead (Secretary), John Lees, Will Skelly, Jay Mangan and Mike Taylor (Coaches), were all on hand to present the new equipment.

Lord Pendry, President of the Football Foundation and former MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, officially presented Stalybridge and Celtic Juniors FC’s new £17,640 pitch maintenance equipment recently (Thursday 11 August 2016).

A £8,820 grant from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, which provides grants towards developing new or refurbished grassroots football facilities, has enabled the club to purchase a ride-on lawnmower, equipped with a slitter and roller.

This will ensure the club has top quality playing surfaces for both training and competition purposes. It will also allow the club to tackle previous issues of uneven, weather-dependent pitches, enabling them to meet regular fixture demands by hosting home matches throughout the upcoming 2016/17 season. It should therefore help ensure cancelled games and fixture congestion are a thing of the past.

The club holds particular importance for Football Foundation President Lord Pendry, who is a Patron of Stalybridge Celtic FC and lives in the town. In August 2014, he opened the club’s £110,000 refurbished changing pavilion, that was also developed thanks to a £91,000 grant from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund.

The Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund is funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, via Sport England. It is delivered by the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 14,000 grants worth more than £560m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £780m – over £1.3bn of investment into the grassroots game.

Since 2000, the Football Foundation Funding Partners’ investment has provided 303grants worth over £15m towards grassroots sports projects worth nearly £30m across the whole of Cheshire.

By providing more high-quality facilities, coupled with coaching at the appropriate age group, the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund aims to improve the experience for regular players as well as attracting new players to the game. Many of the new state-of-the-art facilities will serve to strengthen the connection between professional football clubs and their local communities, particularly in the most deprived areas of the country, through the professional clubs’ community trusts’ outreach work.

Lord Pendry, President of the Football Foundation and Patron of Stalybridge Celtic FC, said: “I was absolutely delighted to present my local team, Stalybridge Celtic Juniors FC, with their new pitch maintenance equipment. The club hold a special place in my heart and I am delighted to see the local grassroots infrastructure being further boosted by this Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund grant.

“This grant will strengthen the tremendous work being put in place by all those at the club – players, coaches, officials, fans and parents alike – that will ensure this great club goes from strength to strength in the upcoming 2016/17 season. I look forward to continue seeing their progress up the football pyramid this season and beyond.

“Special thanks must go to Chairman, Garry Pearce, and Secretary, Carl Whitehead, whose fantastic work ensures the club and local community are in fantastic stead for the future. Importantly, thanks must also go to the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund for their generous financial support that enables the continued development of grassroots sport right across the country through projects like this one at Stalybridge Celtic Juniors FC.”

Garry Pearce, Chairman of Stalybridge Celtic Juniors FC, said: It’s wonderful to receive our new equipment for the soccer centre. This investment means we can keep the facilities in top condition all year round, providing the best environment for our junior players. On behalf of the whole club I would like to thank the Premier League & FA Facilities Fund for their financial support and Lord Pendry for presenting the equipment.”
