It was a day out to remember for a community group as they were invited to meet Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel on Friday (14 February) as Barclays Premier League title sponsor Barclays thanked coaches and volunteers from the group for their commitment to the local community.
Coaches from the Anfield Sports & Community Centre had the privilege of meeting Skrtel at Melwood to quiz them on life in the Barclays Premier League in an exclusive Q&A and autograph session. They then travelled to Anfield to have a behind-the-scenes tour around the famous stadium and museum.
The Anfield Sports & Community Centre in Lower Breck Road is one of the 26 Barclays Spaces for Sports flagship sites and one of 200 community sports sites that Barclays has built with partners the Football Foundation. The centre hosts a range of sport programmes each week as well as educational courses and employment support. Most of these sessions are run by volunteers who themselves also undertake qualifications such as the Community Sports Leadership Award.
The coaches of Anfield Sports & Community Centre were chosen by Barclays because of their valuable work in helping improve lives in the community. This season, Barclays is identifying community groups to visit each Barclays Premier League club as part of its campaign to thank fans and community heroes.
David Wheldon, Managing Director of Brand, Reputation, Citizenship & Marketing at Barclays, commented: “This season Barclays is saying thank you to community heroes across the UK who help make the Barclays Premier League what it is today. They dedicate hours of their time to help improve the prospects of others using the power of football. The coaches from the Anfield Sports & Community Centre work hard to change the lives of those in the local area and deserve this day out as a thank you for their dedication.”
