Young local footballers at the Anfield Sports and Community Centre were given the opportunity to see the Barclays Premier League Trophy first-hand yesterday (Monday 16 February). The day gave kids and adults alike the chance to get pictures with the 25kg masterpiece at Anfield Sports and Community Centre, which is one of 200 Barclays Spaces for Sports sites across the UK. The site delivers a wide variety of sporting activity including football, squash and martial arts.
Marie Rooney, who works at Anfield Sports and Community Centre had this to say about the event: “It was a fantastic occasion to see so many young people enjoying the visit of the Premier League trophy. They all took plenty of photographs and will no doubt tell all their friends and family about the day. Hopefully the trophy will come back to Anfield a bit more permanently soon!”
The event, run by the Football Foundation, is an example of the partnership between Barclays and the Football Foundation, whose programme Barclays Spaces for Sports won Sponsorship / Partnership of the Year at the 2014 Football Business Awards.
Barclays Spaces for Sports is a community sports programme which uses the power of sport to help young people develop the confidence and skills they need, and revitalise disadvantaged communities. It is part of Barclays’ commitment to 5 Million Young Futures – a goal to build the next generation of achievers by helping them develop enterprise, employability and financial skills.
As part of this scheme, Barclays has partnered with the Football Foundation to deliver the award-winning £67m facilities investment programme which has developed 200 community facilities across the UK, that cater for a wide range of sports.
Paulette Cohen, Barclays Head of Global Programmes, said: “Barclays is delighted to be able to provide this unique opportunity for everyone involved with Anfield Sports and Community Centre to see the Barclays Premier League trophy. The trophy tour is a great way for Barclays Spaces for Sports to reward just some of the 53,000 people who use our 200 sites across the country.”
