Dan West, a three-time Paralympic medallist, officially opened Cottenham Parish Council’s new £640,000 changing room pavilion recently (Sunday 11 October 2015). The building was made possible thanks to a £250,000 from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, which provides grants towards developing new or refurbished grassroots football facilities. The council also received £50,000 from the Premier League through the Football Stadia Improvement Fund (FSIF), the largest funders of non-league football in the country.
Heidi Allen, MP for South Cambridgeshire, was also in attendance at the opening of the new pavilion in Cottenham, which now comprises two sets of home and away team changing rooms, as well as an officials’ changing room. A club suite has also been constructed, with a clubroom, kitchen and toilet facilities.
This development will create opportunities for more people to get involved with the football in the local area. An Under-17 side will be formed to act as a bridge between youth and adult sections within the village. The local council also want to work with primary schools to promote playing opportunities to young children.
Cottenham Parish Council worked in partnership with the Cambridgeshire FA to secure a £250,000 grant from the Premier League & the FA Facilities Fund and also matched that figure with a donation of £250,000 themselves.
The Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund is funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, via Sport England. It is delivered by the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 13,000 grants worth more than £530m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of over £740m – over £1.3bn of investment into the grassroots game.
Since 2000 the Football Foundation Funding Partners’ investment has provided 178 grants worth £6.7m towards grassroots sports projects worth over £19m across the whole of Cambridgeshire.
Dan West, Paralympic medallist, said: “It was great to officially open this fantastic pavilion in Cottenham. To be successful at your sport, it is extremely important to have good facilities, and the development here will make a huge difference for the local clubs and community. Huge credit must be given to everyone involved with the project, and to the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, as well as the FSIF, for their commitment to providing facilities that help create good, home-grown talent.”
Heidi Allen, MP for South Cambridgeshire, added, “It is apparent after Sunday’s opening just how much of a community project this has been. It was lovely to see local builders, engineers and residents come together to achieve something truly wonderful. This pavilion will be a valuable asset for the community for years to come – well done team Cottenham!”
Councillor David Mudd, when thanking Dan West, a local Paralympic medallist, for opening the event, thanked the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund for their significant financial support and advice which has enabled the Parish Council, alongside the other contributors, to provide enhanced facilities for Cottenham Football and Cricket Clubs, thereby improving the quality of sport played in the village.
Chris Richards, Chairman of Cottenham United Football Club, added: “The clubs, including Cottenham United FC and Cottenham United Colts FC, and the village, can now boast the best in facilities that will allow them to offer these facilities to all visiting teams with pride. We believe the club will grow in strength and numbers.”
Dave Partridge, Vice-Chairman, Cottenham Cricket Club, said: “Everyone at the club is looking forward to moving into this superb new building right on the pitch boundary. We believe it will encourage even more adults and juniors to join the club and we see this as the start of a really exciting future for both the club and the development of cricket in the Cottenham area.”
