Alan Mak MP enjoys visit to future site of Front Lawns sports hub in Hampshire
Alan Mak, MP for Havant (centre right), was delighted to see the new community sports hub taking shape during his visit to Havant Borough Council's site. He officially presented the cheque for funding from the Football Foundation, gratefully received by Richard Wood, Senior Leisure Officer for the Havant Borough Council (far left), Sacha Nichols (centre left) and Gary Pratt (far right), both from the Hampshire FA.

Alan Mak, MP for Havant, recently visited the site of Havant Borough Council’s new community sports hub (Friday 8 September) which is due for completion in October 2017. The project has been made possible thanks to a grant from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund, which is delivered by the Football Foundation.

The grant has enabled Havant Borough Council to start works on a state-of-the-art third generation (3G) artificial grass pitch (AGP) and carry out much-needed upgrades to the existing changing facilities.

When finished, the changing pavilion will comprise: four changing rooms; two officials’ changing rooms; spectator toilets; clubroom; an equipment store; office space and classrooms. The new floodlit 3G AGP will replace an existing natural grass pitch, which was prone to waterlogging. The upgrade will benefit partner club Havant & Waterlooville Youth FC, by providing improved flexibility over scheduling matches and training.

The hub will also be a key venue for Widbrook United FC. The Hampshire FA, who will operate the site, will deliver coaching workshops and training courses using the facility. Additionally, the charity Big World Impact plans to use the new facility for multi-sport activities including rugby, tennis and cricket.

The club worked in partnership with the Hampshire FA to secure a £923,407 grant from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund. Alan Mak MP officially presented the cheque for this funding during his visit.

The Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund is funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government, via Sport England. It is delivered by the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity. Since it was launched in 2000, the Foundation has awarded around 15,000 grants worth nearly £580m towards improving grassroots sport, which it has used to attract additional partnership funding of just under £800m – over £1.4bn of investment into the grassroots game.

By providing more high-quality facilities, coupled with coaching at the appropriate age group, the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund aims to improve the experience for regular players as well as attracting new players to the game. Many of the new state-of-the-art facilities will serve to strengthen the connection between professional football clubs and their local communities, particularly in the most deprived areas of the country, through the professional clubs’ community trusts’ outreach work.

Alan Mak, MP for Havant, said: “I’d like to thank Havant Borough Council for inviting me here to visit the site. I really enjoyed getting the chance to learn more about the planned sports hub, and how it will benefit our area. Facilities like these are vital to communities as they offer ways to get fit and have fun, whilst also providing jobs for local people during the construction phase.

“I’d like to congratulate the council on securing the funding required to get this project off the ground. This includes the grant from the Premier League, The FA and the Government, through Sport England, which is delivered by the Football Foundation.”

Councillor Leah Turner, Cabinet Lead for Communities and Housing, said: "We at Havant Borough Council are delighted that our partnership with the Football Foundation is delivering this exciting new facility for our residents. It will provide sporting pleasure whilst helping with the desire to keep fit for all users."

Paul Thorogood, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Congratulations should go to Havant Borough Council for working with the Hampshire FA to secure this Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund grant. My thanks go to Alan Mak MP for taking the time to visit the site.

“Since 2000, the Foundation has awarded 362 grants worth £12.6m across Hampshire towards grassroots sports projects worth nearly £28.4m with money generously provided by our funders: the Premier League, The FA and the Government, via Sport England.”
