Lord Pendry

Lord Pendry was Labour Member of Parliament for Stalybridge and Hyde from 1970 to 2001. Formally a full time official for NUPE his parliamentary responsibilities have included Opposition Whip 1971-1974, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in the Northern Ireland Office 1978-1979, Opposition Spokesman on Northern Ireland 1979-1981, Opposition Spokesman on Overseas Development 1981-1982, Opposition Spokesman on Regional Affairs and Devolution 1982 1984 and Opposition Spokesman on Sport and Tourism 1992-1997. He is a past Chairman of the All Party Football Group 1980-1992. Since 1998 he has been Chairman of the All Party Sports Group and was previously Chairman of the Football Trust.

His recreations include football, cricket and boxing.  He played football for Kent schoolboys, boxed for the Royal Air Force team during national service and won a colonial middleweight title and also boxed for Oxford University.

He was elected to the Privy Council in 2001.

He was elected Chairman of the Football Foundation in July 2000 and became President in 2003. He is also Vice Chairman of the BTA Sports Tourism Forum and Patron of the National Federation of Football Supporters Clubs.
