Nigel Adkins

Biography

Having started his career at Liverpool, Nigel spent the majority of his playing career between the sticks at Wigan Athletic after signing from Tranmere Rovers. He made a career total of 336 appearances at club level, and took up management post-retirement. Here he enjoyed huge success initially with Bangor City and then at Scunthorpe United where he gained two promotions from League One. Next he joined Southampton and while in charge of the Saints, Adkins took the South Coast side from the bottom of League One to the Premier League. He also has spells in charge of Reading and Sheffield United.

Nigel is a Football Foundation Ambassador. Our Ambassadors support the Foundation's commitment to building better community sports facilities across the county, which support the health of the nation – its people, communities and economy.

The 3G pitch at Robert May’s School is an excellent example of the hundreds of grassroots facilities that the Football Foundation has delivered across the country. I am delighted to see that, after five years of use, this pitch is still being heavily used every day of the year by both pupils and members of the local community.
